Raggakings Reggae Dancehall Radio Vibes Promotion with DrmZ

This show is about the foundation of Hip Hop.
It's quite interesting how Rap and Dancehall started in similar fashion.
In Jamaica soundsystems took to the streets. Deejays started playing instrumental versions and toasting on top.
Eventually these deejay versions were recorded and this formed a new genre: Dancehall.

DJ Kool Herc grew up in Kingston experiencing this early soundsystem culture.
In 1967 he moved with his parents to the Bronx and fell in love with Funk, especially James Brown.
In the early 70s he bought his own soundsystem and started organising Block Partys.

There were no instumental versions on the b-side of funk records like it often was the case with jamaican singles. But many funk tracks got long instrumental parts known as the breaks.
The dancers loved these parts, thats why it's called break dancing now.
And by playing just the breaks Herc created space to perform lyrics on top.
Others followed his example. Only they did not call it toasting, the called it Rap.

In 79 Sugar Hill Records started to record Rap artists from the Bronx. "Rappers Delight" went straight Top 40 in the US; Top 10 in UK and Germany and became No 1 in Canada and the Netherlands.
Suddenly Hip Hop was a global phenomenon.

Two of the members of Sugar Hills in house band: Skip "Little Axe" McDonalds (guitar) and Doug Wimbish ended up recording with Adrian Sherwood.
Sly & Robbie made a funk album in 87 wich was clearly influenced by Oldschool Rap and Electro Funk like Herbie Hancock and Afrika Bambaataa.
Their hit single "Boops" from this LP uses the same bassline like Melle Mels's "White Lines".

So if  there always has been a strong connection between Hip Hop and Dancehall, why not dedicate a Vibes Promotion show to early Rap, right?
